“If this can help just one person…”

I had the absolute privilege of interviewing players and backroom staff about their lived experience of mental health in a Rugby World Cup, for my master’s research.
I ventured into this research wanting it to make a difference in the lives of people, not just to write 12,000 words never to be read again. Then as I listened to each person, I wanted even more to ensure my research made a difference, to honour their time, their wisdom and sometimes their vulnerability.
Many times, I heard phrases like “If this can help future players or coaches etc” and thanks to some brilliantly kind and generous academics, I’ll be sharing my research at the World Rugby, Rugby Science Network in October, to a room full of practitioners and decision makers, sharing those voices of lived experience.
